Minnesota PTA Statement Concerning DACA

Today it was announced that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals “Dreamers Act” (also known as DACA) will be dissolved. “Every Child, One Voice” is not just a slogan but a guiding principle of PTA at the national, state and local levels. With this in mind, Minnesota PTA would like to post the following statement from the National Parent Teacher Association.

Since 2011 National PTA has supported legislative action entitled the “Dream Act” to give undocumented children–brought to the US as children–a path to citizenship. ALL children matter in this country. Even the undocumented ones.

“National PTA is monitoring this issue and are ready to engage when the opportunity is appropriate. We have previously supported measures for giving undocumented students a chance to earn legal status if they came here as children.

“Furthermore, National PTA believes that it is in the national interest to ensure that all children, including undocumented children, have the opportunity to reach their full potential and become productive members of society. Access to a free public education is the most effective method of securing this opportunity, and should not be denied to any child.

“PTA members are committed to making schools a welcoming place for all students and families regardless of immigration status. As such, we have created the resource “FAQs: Immigrant & Families at School” to help schools and families.”
