2019 Legislative and Policy Agenda

2019 Legislative and Policy Agenda

The 2019 session of the Minnesota Legislature began on January 8, 2019.  Since then, Minnesota PTA has been monitoring legislation as it has been introduced in committees these last few weeks and months.  The Minnesota PTA Board of Directors approved our 2019 Legislative and Policy Agenda in January, and we use this document to help us determine which issues we will focus on this session.  The Legislative and Policy Agenda outlines the focus areas for Minnesota PTA advocacy this legislative session. There are two areas of advocacy activity:

Legislative Focus – These are areas where Minnesota PTA will actively advocate for legislation, including:

  • Stable Education Funding
  • Special Education Cross Subsidy
  • School Safety
  • Mental Health Services and Student Support Staff
  • Vouchers, Tax Credits and Scholarships
  • Teacher recruitment, retention and diversity
  • Full Service Community Schools

Policy Focus – Minnesota PTA will provide research, best practices, and strategies to support our local units and members as they advocate in the following areas:

  • Parent and Family Engagement in ESSA Implementation
  • Healthy Sleep for Teens
  • School Lunch Policies
  • Recess
  • Teacher and staff appreciation

Please review the Legislative and Policy Agenda for details about each advocacy area. Stay connected to the Minnesota PTA website, Facebook page and Twitter throughout the legislative session for background materials and calls to action.
